Why Do People Have Cosmetic Procedures?

By Alistair Nole

It's more accepted these days that certain signs of aging, such as wrinkles or a loss of elasticity in the skin, are best treated in consultation with a cosmetic surgeon. Excessive skin or a loss of collagen in certain parts of the face may require treatment that can provide the proper course of action in order to get the results that you want. In the past ten years, treatment options have grown dramatically and their popularity continues to explode. So what are some of roots of the motivation people have nowadays to get treatments done?

One factor at the heart of many people's decision to seek treatments is their self esteem. Some seek improved confidence, and decreased self-consciousness. For example, one may see their nose as large or conspicuous. Whether true or not, if one believes this to be true, the perception can create the reality and cause discomfort and anxiety. Some people work very hard at diet, exercise, makeup, clothes and so on, to look their best, so it can be quite important to address a problem or flaw that they can improve upon, or an area that they would like to make just a bit better. This becomes even more important when it is linked to sexuality.

The end result of a change can actually increase a person's sense of improvement in quality of life or work. This can include things like wearing the type of clothes or bathing suits you want to wear. Or you would like to feel good about the body that you have because you like going to the beach. Perhaps you deal with the public a lot or have a very public job. These all weigh in the decision.

Vanity is one of the top motivators and it can be closely connected with self esteem. It's only natural to want to regain a lost positive attribute. For example, my lips used to be full but now... , I always used to have a shapely figure but now.... Having good positive reinforcement over the years and losing that attribute can be like losing one's self-identity.

It's also very natural to want to slow down, reverse or turn back the effects of aging that are beginning to appear or have been creeping along for a while. Moreover, wanting to alter or improve a feature that you have always disliked is equally natural. This can be an issue of maturity-- you thought about it a lot when you were younger and after years of reflection have realized that it definitely is something you would like improved.

Certainly, health reasons are another motivating factor. The various unpleasant postpartum changes to the body can be depressing for any mom. And correcting post-weight loss body changes can be a real tangible benefit. Also, there could be a need to relieve physical factors or symptoms. For example, chronic recurrent headaches, neck strain, lower back pain, shoulder notching, numbing or tingling in the hands due to nerve stretch could all be relieved by a breast reduction -- these are all associated with excessively large, heavy, dense breasts (mammary hypertrophy). Almost all of these problems are 100% remedied by a breast reduction procedure.

Dramatic life changes can also be a big motivator. Sometimes people feel like their divorce shows on their face, or that their work or other substantial stresses of life have aged them. There are clear, safe and affordable options available for anyone looking to make those changes or small corrections, whatever the reasons.
