Treating Acne With Chemical Peels

By Marlene Ataine

Practically all teenagers suffer from acne at one time or another, but sometimes it's only a few 'zits' or pimples. In more severe cases though, the acne can be a variety of spots called whiteheads or blackheads, or even worse they can be large red, inflamed spots termed cysts. These skin pimples, spots and cysts can change the tone of the skin, leaving a darker tone and severe acne can in some cases leave scarring.

Acne is not dangerous, but can leave skin scars. The pores (tiny holes) in human skin are connected to oil glands underneath it. Follicles are like small canals that connect the pores to the glands. An oily liquid called sebum is produced in these glands. The sebum carries dead skin cells through the follicles to the surface of the skin. A small hair grows through the follicle out of the skin. Oil accumulates under the skin when these follicles get blocked, resulting in pimples. Hormonal changes during puberty can result in more oil in the skin, so this is why many teenagers have acne. However it is not just teenagers who suffer from acne, adults can also develop acne later on in life, which is called adult acne.

A hypersensitivity or overproduction of androgens (male hormones) is the cause of some adult acne. But an imbalance in both male and female hormones (estrogen) can also cause breakouts. During pregnancy, perimenopause, and menopause, this can happen to women. Sometimes acne is also encouraged by certain medications, such as corticosteroids, or even cosmetics.

To help alleviate mild and moderate adult acne, chemical peels are a very good treatment. By exfoliating the skin, chemical peels take effect; this removes dead skin cells which have clogged the pores, and cleanses the skin of the dirt. This reduces the formation of acne pimples and spots. Chemical peels may also help to reduce some of the skin discolouration and uneven skin tone caused by acne.

Chemical peels are a very cost effective option for acne treatment. For acne, they are also a very safe treatment. The top layers of the skin are exfoliated and cleansed by superficial chemical skin peels that remove all the dead skin cells. A course of six peels is usually recommended, each performed at least one week apart. A reduction in the amount of acne breakouts will be noticeable, and skin texture will improve too.

Only a credible skin care clinic should be approached for your acne treatment chemical peel. It is important to consult a reputable clinic to obtain advice on how the chemical peel treatment will benefit your skin type, before embarking on treatment with chemical peels for acne.
