Considering Botox?

By Alina H. Winamaker

Botox, under prescription, can be used to smooth away the frown lines between the eyebrows, and other facial wrinkles, that men and women get in middle age. Smoothing out lines is what it is most often used for. When people feel the lines on their forehead make them look tired or even angry, they choose this type of cosmetic improvement.

You should not consider this treatment if you have an allergy to any of the ingredients of Botox. If there is an infection in the skin surrounding the area being injected, common sense dictates that you shouldn't go ahead. Before a treatment, tell your physician if you have any issues such as asthma that affect your breathing.

How does it work?

The skin's wrinkles normally form right next to a muscle that is close to, and normally beneath, it.The Botox restricts nerve impulses from reaching the tissue that causes the wrinkle. So, little muscle movement results in the skin supported by the muscle stopping being creased by constant expression contractions. With inhibited muscle contractions, lines and wrinkles stop forming. The person gets a more youthful look as a result, when frown lines and other wrinkles are reduced.

Using Botox injections for wrinkles is non invasive and the procedure is usually carried out in approximately 20-30 minutes. The practitioner injects a small amount of Botox into the site to be treated. As it starts working, the Botox blocks the nerve signals to the muscles under the skin. The muscle therefore relaxes and the skin is smoothed, causing facial lines to diminish.

One normally minor side effect from the Botox Injection Treatment is slightly red and sore skin for a few days. A patient can usually return to work the same day, right after leaving the clinic. It may take up to a week to maximize the full effect, but the treatment usually starts to work within 3 days.

After the Treatment

Try to exercise your treated muscles for one to two hours following your procedure. Squinting, frowning and raising your eyebrows should all be practiced. This helps work the Botox into your muscles. If you forget or don't have the time to do it, it won't impact your results negatively, but it can help if you do do it.

Do not do yoga, heavy lifting or any type of strenuous exercise for four hours after the treatment, and take care to not rub or massage those areas that have been treated. Moreover, do not ingest Advil, Tylenol or vitamin D after the procedure.

If, after the procedure, you see some tiny bumps or marks on your face, do not be concerned. They will disappear in a few hours.

Make sure whoever is doing your Botox treatment is trained specifically in this procedure. These treatments are medical procedures and need to be viewed as such.
