It's too bad that so many people are not aware of the harm they are causing themselves and their loved ones with the poor food choices they are making. Lifestyle is very different today than it was years ago, as everyone is on the go and on the workforce. The problem is that they are turning to packaged foods which contain large amounts of sugar, salt, and other unhealthy ingredients. A healthy life begins with a low glycemic diet.

The reason behind this is to keep the body stable without spiking blood sugar levels. With all these unhealthy ingredients, they can get out of control and lead to prediabetes, and eventually the debilitating chronic diabetes. Even foods in their raw form can be a bad choices because of the fact that they turn into sugar or glucose in the body. Carbohydrates are responsible for this.

Sugar or glucose is a necessity within the body. This is what fuels the body, from the brain to the organs. Eating incorrectly can cause a spike in blood sugar levels because of the rapid digestion. However, the right food choices will slow down digestion and thus help people in so many ways. The TI food ratings must be below 55 to be considered healthy. Anything above and beyond that is the exact opposite.

In addition to diabetes slower digestible foods also help those who have high cholesterol levels. Of course, many people do understand that there is a link between high cholesterol and heart disease. Therefore, refraining from eating poorly can avoid this from happening as well. Moreover, these slowly digested foods enable people to maintain or even lose weight. That's because people feel fuller when they eat them.

As usual, it is highly recommended to increase the amount of fruits and vegetables eaten in the day. Legumes are also recommended, as are very products and whole grains. But, some people make the mistake of choosing good food and cooking them in the worst way possible, which is frying, rendering them unhealthy as well. Also, stay away from processed foods.

There are other contributors to what makes a food healthy and have a low glycemic index. To make it easy, choose whole wheat pasta, whole wheat bread, wild or brown rice, brown sugar, and the like. Obviously, it is plain to see that staying away from refined foods is the way to go. Choose oatmeal, barley or bran in the morning. Also, reduce potato consumption.

Get to know the GI chart and the recommendations. Watch out for starchy foods. These should definitely be avoided as much as possible, or at least reduced.

Embracing a low glycemic diet can do so much for a person, even when that person is a young child. Better eating habits are important for everyone. In addition to being healthier, people will also look better, with regards to wait and the texture of their skin. But, it is very important to drink a lot more water than previously. Many of these recommendations and foods contain a lot of fiber, which is good for someone, but constipation may ensue if fluid intake is not increased.
