The Increasing Botox Trend

By Ariel Mernal

Botox injections are nowadays popular as a 'quick fix' solution to younger looking skin. Its cosmetic applications have advanced significantly over the last few years, with more and more people now looking to undergo botox injections with the hope of getting rid of fine lines and wrinkles. What was once probably thought to be a procedure whose novelty might wear off one day is nowadays considered to be one that is here to stay.

You may have read about it in the news or even seen it on television - more and more celebrities are now using botox injections to maintain their young looks and skin. But the question on many people's mind is 'why is it so popular?' or 'what makes it such a sought after procedure?'

There is a very basic reason for this. Botox is a cheap and effective solution to ageing skin. Unlike plastic surgery, there are no scars after the procedure, it's low-cost, and it takes only a few minutes to have done. Because of the constant coverage by media about celebrity procedures, the public is more aware about botox nowadays.

What about Botox for Men?

It's a mistake for people to think that the only people out there getting botox treatments are women. The facts show something else, entirely. Even though the procedure is more often performed on women, men are getting botox treatments more often nowadays. Media outlets have come up with a term for this, and 'bro-tox' seems to fit the bill. Some clinics now report that up to 50% of their patients undergoing botox are male!

The trends are always evolving

The fact is, botox usage is going up. In one year, 2010 to 2011, it went up from 5.4 million, to 5.7 million botox patients, so it went up 5% in that year alone. There are those who say that the number is more accurately about 10% per year that it rises. Most people see these numbers and are not surprised by them. In the past, the general attitude toward botox treatments were negative, but as time goes on, it's no longer just the super wealthy that can afford them, and regular people are much more accepting of the procedure. It has now become a well recognized and widely accepted surgical procedure.

There is more than this though. Botox's applications have advanced from just cosmetic use to management of a variety of clinical conditions that cause muscle spasticity. Spastic paraparesis and cerebral palsy for adults and children, and blepharospasm are included in the other treatments that botox can be helpful for. Results have been promising and outcomes have been excellent. Botox injections can be used to treat excessive sweating, and some have found success in using scalp injections to help to treat migraine headaches.

There is no doubt that the future is bright for botox. Advancements are constantly being made, and at this time the future prospects are looking quite grand.
