The Types Of Bariatric Surgery New Jersey

By Cynthia Clark

Some people want to lose a few pounds for aesthetic reasons, but many people who are struggling with extra pounds have to lose them for their health. Diabetes, heart disease and other life-threatening conditions can occur with obesity, but shedding the pounds is not easy. If you need help in your battle of the bulge, then consider getting bariatric surgery new jersey.

When you visit your doctor to talk about your bariatric options, there will be many to choose from. Ultimately, the one your doctor chooses for you will depend on many things, including how much weight you wish to lose and what the current state of your health is, among many other considerations. They will always do the best procedure for your needs.

One type of procedure that you might undertake is a sleeve gastrectomy. If your Body Mass Index or BMI is 35 or higher, then you may qualify to have this surgery. If you do, the surgeon would take a balloon that is shaped a bit like your stomach or a banana, and put it into your stomach in order to make you feel fuller quicker and with less food.

An alternative to the sleeve is another procedure called gastric banding. As the name suggests, a band is inserted around your stomach to make it smaller, then an injection port is put in along the abdominal wall with a port that they doctor can use to inject saline into your stomach. This saline takes up room in your stomach so there is less room for food, which gives you a fuller feeling faster. It can be adjusted to accept more or less saline as needed, so it can grow or shrink with your needs as your weight loss goals change.

If you want another option, then perhaps you should discuss something called the Roux-en-Y. This is where a small pouch is made inside the body, and a piece of your small intestine is attached to it. This allows you to digest the food while bypassing a large amount of the intestinal tract, so less calories and food is actually absorbed.

While some doctors may use old fashioned surgical methods to achieve these, others rely on robotics to do it. For example, the da Vinci system uses instruments that can bend in ways that scalpels and human hands cannot, so they can perform these surgeries faster and with a much smaller incision. That means less scaring and less recovery time, as well as increased accuracy.

While these are all great procedures that can help you lose weight quickly, you can also do something that is nonsurgical. Procedures called gastric balloons allow you to get a balloon placed in your stomach, which can be left there up to six months, which is why it is only good for people who need to lose between 25 and 50 lbs. It only requires local anesthesia and the use of a gastroscope, so there are no incisions or scars.

Sometimes, revisions need to be done on your surgery. There may be complications, or in some cases the materials inserted must be removed or adjusted in order to keep you healthy and moving in the right direction.
