By Steven Purdy

We all know that the top foods to take in when we want to lose weight are healthy fats, whole grains and lean meats. These food items fill us with protein and also energy. They keep the body nutritionally well balanced with minimal calories while we work hard to lose our fat at the gym. Did you know though that a number of the diet foods you've been consuming may have been hindering your ability to lose weight? They may be preventing you from losing weight altogether! Here are some of the foods that you might be eating which are hurting your efforts to lose weight.

Sports Drinks usually do not really help you. You've probably been told that if you want to help your body renew itself after a work out, you should drink a sports drink. Most doctors will tell you, though, that if your workout doesn't go over ninety minutes then you ought to be fine just by drinking water. Sports drinks are rich in calories and sugar and a heap of other stuff like artificial flavors and colors that will defeat any of your attempts at eating a natural and healthy diet. Choose chocolate milk for your drink as a substitute. The sugars within the chocolate can help your muscles start to recover and the calcium in milk keeps your bones strong.

Protein Shakes are certainly not your friend. Lots of folks think that having a protein shake is a good way to curb cravings between meals. What you are actually doing, especially if the majority of your diet consists of whole and healthy foods, is helping your body overdose on protein. No matter what other folks think, protein is not stashed in the muscles, it is stored in your body as fat. This shows that if you have taken in too much protein during the day your body stores what it doesn't need in your fat, which won't help you lose weight or inches at all.

Pre-packaged deli meat is not nearly as good for you as you might believe it is. It's commonly considered that a sandwich constructed of whole grain bread and lean pre-packaged deli meat is a pretty good lunch time item. The real truth is that pre-packaged deli meat has a large amount of preservatives and definately will provide you with about a third of your advised sodium intake for the day. This can be specifically harmful if you are at risk for heart disease. Rather than purchasing pre-packaged deli meat, select some home cooked chicken or the deli meats that is newly sliced at your deli counter. Sure these choices are more expensive but they are much healthier for you in the long run.

There are lots of things that we believe are much healthier than others like choosing a whole wheat bagel each morning when the truth is that a bowl of cinnamon sprinkled oatmeal is a much healthier choice. Ask a medical expert which things are the best to eat and then follow the directions you are given. If you understand and are careful about which kind of food you let yourself eat, losing weight isn't going to be a terribly big deal.
